Church Governance
As a Presbyterian church, Mt.
Pleasant Community Church is governed by the church Session
which includes the Teaching Elders or pastors called by the
congregation and a minimum of nine Ruling Elders elected by the
congregation. The Session has responsibility for the oversight
and supervision of the whole life of the church, including the
spiritual nurture of the members and all ministries. Each Ruling
Elder may serve two consecutive three-year terms, then must step
down for at least one year before becoming eligible for
reelection. The Session of Community Church ordinarily meets
once per month.
The Board of Deacons is charged with overseeing ministries of
compassion to the sick, friendless, bereaved, and those in any
way distressed. Like the Session, the Board of Deacons is
composed of a minimum of nine members and each may serve no more
than six years consecutively. The deacons meet once per month
and are very active in service as needed.
Community Churchs Board of Trustees is a standing committee
elected by the congregation. This board has a minimum of six
members (also limited to no more than six consecutive years) and
oversees the churchs buildings, land, and finances. The Board
of Trustees meets once per month to tend to its areas of
responsibility, including development and management of the
annual budget.
The Nominating Committee consists of two members from the
Session, one each from Trustees and Deacons, and four members
elected by the congregation. The pastor also serves ex officio.
The Nominating Committee nominates from the membership to each
of the offices annually as vacancies arise or need requires, and
recommends the slate to the congregation for election.
The
congregation also exercises a governing role in electing church
officers, in receiving annual reports from the ministries of the
church, and in approving the annual budget. The congregation
also calls each pastor and associate pastor.
As a member of the Midwest Presbytery of the Evangelical
Presbyterian Church, Community Church sends representatives to
meetings of the Presbytery and General Assembly and orders its
government and discipline according to the Book of Government
and Book of Discipline of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
