The History of Community Church
In 1980, a group of church members from First Presbyterian
Church of Mt. Pleasant felt called to leave this historic church
to begin a new work. They left, in part, because of conflict
that arose over their participation in a renewal movement that
had begun at First Presbyterian Church. Differences in both
theology and worship style suggested it was time for a new
church to begin.
The
first worship service was held June 15, 1980, in the chapel (now
the Art Gallery) of Central Michigan University. About 200
people gathered to worship and pray. At the time, there was no
pastor, no church name, and no real plan for the future. Those
who gathered did so out of an authentic desire to worship God
and a firm conviction to share the life-transforming love of God
with the campus and community. Nearly thirty years later, these
convictions continue to shape Mt. Pleasant Community Church. We
desire to be a “dynamic biblical community sharing the redeeming
love of Jesus Christ.”
The spirit of volunteerism that has become our hallmark was
formed during the church’s early years. Each week, teams of
volunteers set up for worship at the CMU chapel for the first
three months, and then in the Mt. Pleasant High School
auditorium. The church called the Rev. Malcolm Brown as its
first pastor on October 5, 1980, and formed as an Evangelical
Presbyterian Church a little more than a year later on October
25, 1981. Community Church joined the EPC because they sensed
there a kindred spirit, a desire to remain a grace filled
church, open to the leading of the Spirit, and committed to the
essentials of the faith as expressed in the EPC Essentials
statement and the historic
Westminster
Confession of Faith which underpinned the Essentials. Community
Church also embraced the EPC Motto, “In essentials unity, in
non-essentials, liberty, in all things, charity.” We have sought
to live by that motto as a community which is open and welcoming
to all who come to us, a place where people find a safe place to
explore faith.
During Pastor Brown’s years, Community Church experienced
further growth, acquired 25 acres of land, and built its first
building. Volunteers participated at every stage of the
building. Jack Houghton, a member and a skilled mason, laid the
bricks of the sanctuary walls. The new building was dedicated
September, 1985. Soon thereafter, Malcolm Brown received a call
to a church in Ann Arbor. |

A new season of ministry at Community Church began with the
installation of the second pastor, Bill Lindner, on July 1, 1988.
Pastor Bill was a gifted musician and skilled in the ministry of
reconciliation. Under his leadership the church experienced healing
from several years of conflict, particularly that between
charismatic and non-charismatic members of the church, each of which
was holding its own service. Pastor Bill brought unity to these
groups by bringing the two together in one service.
The new unity at Community Church ushered in a new season of growth
and effectiveness in the community. In 1991, Community Church ,
under the creation and direction of Kathy Long, held the first of
the summer Vacation Bible Schools which have since become one of its
signature ministries. Kathy Long joined the staff in 1992 as the
Director of Christian Education. She injected tremendous energy and
creativity into many areas of ministry, including ministry to
children, to women, and to seniors. The church added a second
service in 1994. By the late 1990s, attendance was over 450. Leaders
recognized the need for strategic vision and developed the church’s
Vision, Mission, and Values statements. The church brought on an
associate pastor, Jamie Cupschalk, to help carry the load of
expanded ministry and began to discuss building plans. These plans
were interrupted for a short season when Pastor Bill received a call
to North Carolina.
Although
Pastor Bill’s departure put building plans on hold, the church’s
spirit of volunteerism enabled dynamic ministry to continue for the
six month interval until Pastor Scott McKee was installed in June,
2000. The Lord used Pastor Scott’s exceptional gifts in effective
biblical communication and leadership to bring explosive growth to
Community Church. Within months of his arrival, attendance exceeded
the capacity of our existing building and we began our “Building to
Build People” campaign. We broke ground in June of 2002 and held our
first worship service in the new facility on June 15, 2003. The
multiplication of membership and regular attendees has brought with
it a need for additional staff. Rev. Ralph Fischer joined as part
time Pastor of Care in June, 2004, Associate Pastor Brian LaMew came
aboard in June, 2005, and Assistant Pastor Caz Minter joined in
March, 2006.
This past fall, the elders and Pastor Scott reflected on the past
eight years of ministry during our annual retreat with a profound
sense of gratitude for the growth God has given, the new ministries
we have launched to serve and reach the community more effectively,
and the stories of hundreds of lives changed through the ministry of
Community Church. We look forward to a future confident that God has
exciting plans to use us to reach out to the unchurched of our
community and campus with the life changing good news of God’s
grace.
