A Note From Sue
May
was a busy month for all of us, but especially for CCN
volunteers. We started the month off with our first
Spring Appreciation Picnic. Doris Lucas spoiled us with
a delicious selection of her salads and my husband, Gary
and one of our faithful CCN volunteers, David (who
happens to be a culinary school graduate) manned the
grill and served up Angus burgers, veggie burgers and
Koegel hot dogs!
We were also able to celebrate two big milestones; 1)
CCN has distributed over 1 Million lbs of food as of
April 09 and 2)We launched our first ever CCN electronic
newspaper, the “Compassion Connection”. If you haven’t
had a chance to check it out, I invite you to do so;
www.ccnhome.org/ccnenews/.
In other exciting news, we
had our first Mt Pleasant Education Association
sponsored mobile pantry at West Intermediate School on
May 9th. Though we had a little rain, we had a great
day. Cindy Cooper and Judy Baker collaborated to get the
support of the Superintendent, the education association
and the teachers. Many first time volunteers turned out
for the event where we were able to distribute over
10,000 lbs of food, including 7500 lbs of mixed chicken,
beef and sausage to over 300 families. The high school
food service students baked dozens and dozens of
brownies and muffins (YUM)!
The
end of the year Charity Drive was also squeezed into
May. Thousands of food, clothing, cleaning, personal
care, school supply and house ware items were brought
into Community Church. Several faithful volunteers spent
many hours sorting and organizing items to be shared
with our community. Clothing items, (10 large boxes
full) winter wear and bedding went to Christmas
Outreach, first. Remaining clothing and house wear items
(25 extra large boxes plus 2 truck loads) went to the
Thrift store (proceeds go to help with literacy outreach
in Mt Pleasant) and to Salvation Army (proceeds go to
help with their local outreach for families in need).
Food (445 20-lb bags of food), personal care, cleaning
and paper products (397 items) went directly to our
guests at the May 30th pantry.
Our final “first” for May was the first partnership
between the Kiwanis Service Club , the “K-kids” (a
junior Kiwanis organization) and Morey Public School
Academy. These groups teamed up to host a successful
pantry at Morey School. We hope to continue with this
partnership strategy. As I always like to say, “Together
, we can and do achieve more.”
CARE KITS – Each month our partner agencies tell
our care kit team that they would be able to distribute
over 250 care kits if we were able to supply them.
Families in need, that are not able to meet their food
needs are unlikely to spend what limited income they
have on care items for themselves or their homes. By
putting together care kits, we make these items that
most of us take for granted, available to families on a
very tight budget.
This month we have an opportunity to put a dent in the
need by having a care kit collection! On June 7th you
can pick up your bag/list and return it filled with
needed items the following week on June 13th. We will
quickly get the care kits into the hands of the agencies
that can distribute the kits to families in need,
directly.
We
would like to challenge you! We challenge you to put one
kit together each month for 12months. If 250 families
from community church would put together 1 care kit each
month, or if 500 families put one kit together every
other month, we could meet this very basic need! Stretch
yourself. Stretch your faith….commit to making a
difference each month. Take our Care Kit Challenge!
Soup Kitchen Sundays - Does your schedule allow
you a little extra time in the summer to serve? Join our
team this summer. Help us to give our year round
volunteers a couple of Sundays off! If you can give one
Sunday morning, or even 2-3 hours on a Sunday to serve
during June, July or August, you will be a blessing to
our Soup Kitchen volunteers and guests! You can sign up
on your own or serve with a couple of family members or
friends. Serving times are 9-11 (set up and cook) or
11-2 (serve and clean-up). Contact Kathy at
soup@mpcc.org or call her at 773-3517 to find an
open date that fits your schedule.
