Golf Outing
The outing was once again a large success with 50
golfers participating. Our host, Joe Schumer at the
Pines, did a wonderful job.
In
addition to a well prepared, challenging golf course, he
even had coffee and muffins awaiting us when we arrived.
We took the challenge on and faced wind, rain and
temperatures that made hitting some shots a real
adventure. There was lots of fellowship and laughter
among all of the groups. Brad Fahr stated, "It is my
understanding, and there is some video to support, that
one foursome, which included a pastor, had some time
while waiting to tee off and chose to do a "Happy
Gillmore" impression into Lake Isabella. I also
understand" , Brad said, "that same pastor, upon running
up to hit his ball, missed and slipped and came down
bottom first on the ground." Good news! He didn't get
hurt, other than pride, and was walking without a limp,
Sunday morning. We are hoping for better weather next
year and an even larger group to experience this time of
men's fellowship. We have discussed the possibility of
making this event into an overnight event in the future,
with other teaching opportunities. Don't miss this event
in 2010.
REACH
Another great event for men, young and old, to connect
with one another. We met for a great barbecue dinner,
cooked by our own Jose DelCastillo. We then proceeded
over to CMU's climbing wall. It is a wonderful thing to
men of all ages reaching out to support each other as
they push the envelope a little to achieve the high
ropes course. Many also attempt ed
to scale the various portions of the climbing wall and a
few made it to the top! One wonderful story involved
Rick Phelps' son Vova. He would climb up far enough to
use the zip line to get back down but did not feel
comfortable to go the rest of the way on the ropes
course. By the end of the evening, with the support and
encouragement of our group, he ventured out on the ropes
course. Though he was cautious and tentative on his
moves, he pressed on eventually finishing the entire
course. Together we were able to give him the boost he
needed to reach the finish. We had planned to end the
evening with a bon fire but the wind was blowing hard
and we decided to be safe and move inside the church to
share some of the experience from the night. The
leadership team believes that we did "Reach" some of the
young men and we also showed them that even we older men
can have fun.
